Born on April 12, 1979 in New York, New York. Her mother was a painter and teacher. Her father was a computer consultant. She is the youngest of two children. Her older brother is named Asa. She started studying modern dance at age six, and still studies it; at nine she took acting class at Lee Strasberg Studio; attended Professional Performing Arts School in New York and tended toward acting. In her other schooling she studied humanities and science.
Claire and her family lived in New York with a cat named Fifi-Champion.
