My So-Called Life Wiki

Tarot cards are used for divination, fortune telling, and mystical study. Tarot cards appear in the episode Other People's Mothers where Amber Vallon gives Angela Chase a reading. Amber is rather adept with the cards and is able to pinpoint exact issues in Angela's life.

They represent challenges and tests, twists of fate. No card is all good or all bad. Cards can be positive or negative, depending on where they fall. When you read someone's future, they must think of a question. They must hold it in their mind. The cards are read in sequence. Each card leads to the next. We move from terror and loss to unexpected good fortune. And out of darkness, hope is born.

The cards must be treated with respect.

Amber does tarot readings as a hobby. She frequently gives readings for Rayanne. A week before the episode Other People's Mothers, Rayanne's reading contained several cards indicating prosperity.

Tarot cards as defined in the episode:

The World – The daughter who hides her feelings behind the mask. This represents Patty.

The Moon – The deadly mother; the wicked witch.

Death – One door opens, another closes. The card which Rayanne wants to get as a tattoo, from Tattoo Artist. This card represents Rayanne's journey in this episode.

The Magician – This represents Graham but also Angela on another level.

The Fool – This represents Danielle.

The Empress – This represents Vivian.

Strength – This also represents Patty.

The Wheel of Fortune – Shown as an elder couple (Aunt and Uncle) dancing in a circle and children playing in a circle; cycles of time and life.
